Histoire des voyages de Scarmentado or history trips Scarmentado written by himself is a philosophical tale of Voltaire writes to 1753 and published in 1756 in the Suite mixtures published by Cramer brothers. This tale, ironically, makes us travel in various countries of Europe , in Asia , in Africa and refers to America , through the character of Scarmentado, whose name comes from the Italian meaning scarso "lean" and mentado meaning "gifted mind" meaning a man of little mind, naive. In every country he visits, he will face the absurdity of rites, ridiculous customs of the time and the cruelty and injustice of men. Unlike the protagonists Babouc , Zadig and Memnon previous stories, Scarmentado is devoid of character and ambition. The usual irony of Voltaire turned into a form of disgust and is characterized by the use of antiphrases disillusioned.
