The novel is a long flashback , narrated in first person by the protagonist Toru Watanabe. On an airplane landed in Hamburg to the sound of Norwegian Wood the Beatles Watanabe remembers exactly something that happened seventeen years ago and which marked his youth: the chance encounter with Naoko, Kizuki's girlfriend, his only friend, who committed suicide a few months before. The memory of Naoko will be an opportunity to go through the difficult years of the university. The impossible love for the same Naoko, then hospitalized in a mental institution and that for Midori, a college classmate of life experienced by family bereavements, life in college, his friendship with Nagasawa, boy daring and controversial. The riots in universities only provide a time reference, it is the end of the sixties. Watanabe will remain alien to the university occupations and revolutionary purposes. His is a journey of pain and personal growth, which led him to the realization that death is not the antithesis of life but an intrinsic part.
