Inthis volume, Robin Rinaldi will examine three countries—Ireland,Poland, and Spain—that have had a major impact on both Europeanand, in a larger sense, Western dance. With the development of thereel and jig, among others, Ireland has a rich celebratory dancetradition that has laid the foundation for today’s popular stepdances such as Riverdance and Lord of Dance.Poland, despite itstumultuous history, also developed an identity through its dancetradition. Such dances as the mazur and polonez, which appeared inballrooms throughout Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenthcenturies, gave Poland a semblance of being that it sorelyneeded.Spain, too, was affected by a number of outside influences butdeveloped many unique forms of dance, such as flamenco and bolero, that emphasized free movements of both the arms and legs, and thrivedin a time when the rest of Europe was enthralled with classic ballet.
